Exciting Current: Read the Denominator Before the Percentage

  • Chenfan Power

This technical article is in English. Only the surrounding interface is localized.

An exciting-current percentage is incomplete until the reference current is known.

A smaller percentage does not automatically identify a better core.

A current-percentage fraction is paired with two winding configurations and their ampere-turns basis.
Retain the current reference, turns and connection with the percentage. Raw amperes and normalized percentages are not stand-alone material properties. · Chenfan Electric

Read the winding turns and connection basis

On a transformer report, the result may be expressed relative to a specified rated winding current under an agreed convention. On a temporary-winding core test, there may be no directly equivalent rated-current denominator. Copying the percentage from one context into the other can create a meaningless comparison.

The energized turns matter too. For a given magnetic circuit and flux condition, magnetomotive force is associated with ampere-turns. Changing the test winding changes the current needed to provide that excitation. Raw amperes are therefore not a material property that can be ranked independently of the setup.

The connection adds another layer. Line current and winding current are not always the same quantity, and three-phase excitation can differ from phase-by-phase diagnostic testing. The report must identify what was measured and how the reported value was formed.

Compare phase and waveform evidence appropriately

Before judging a result, establish the flux condition, frequency, waveform, turns, winding connection and reporting convention. Then compare it with a relevant design reference or with comparable units measured the same way.

Look at the pattern as well as the aggregate. Individual phase readings can carry information that an average hides, but the construction and excitation arrangement determine the relevant comparison. Do not apply one familiar phase pattern as a universal rule for all transformer constructions.

The waveform can matter even when the RMS value is repeatable. Exciting current is often non-sinusoidal, so a simple phase-angle interpretation may not describe the whole signal. Use measurement equipment and analysis suited to the actual waveform.

Keep the raw readings with the reported percentage

Once the measurement basis is sound, an unexplained departure can direct investigation toward the magnetic circuit, assembly state or other relevant electrical paths. It still does not identify the cause without supporting evidence.

For procurement, a meaningful requirement states the test and normalization basis alongside the limit. A universal percentage imposed on unrelated core designs risks rejecting appropriate constructions and accepting incomparable reports.

Keep the original current readings and the calculation basis with the reported percentage. The denominator is part of the evidence, not an administrative detail to be removed from a summary sheet.

Practical takeaway

The denominator, winding turns and connection can change the meaning of an apparently favourable percentage.

Chenfan Electric manufactures custom transformer cores according to customer drawings. Where applicable to the specified material and core design, agreed process controls include burr height below 0.02 mm and stacking factor above 97%. Measurement methods and acceptance conditions are defined for each order.
