Why a Firm Core Quotation Starts with the Drawing

  • Chenfan Power

This technical article is in English. Only the surrounding interface is localized.

Weight and grade can support an estimate.

They do not fully define the work being priced.

A lamination drawing shows width, length, gauge, joint features and delivery-scope references without invented dimensions.
A firm quotation depends on the controlled geometry and manufacturing scope, not a material grade and approximate mass alone. · Chenfan Electric

Price the actual cutting and assembly task

A firm transformer-core quotation needs the drawing because the material mass does not reveal the cutting, stacking and delivery problem.

Two cores with similar steel weight may use different strip-width combinations and cutting patterns. Their material utilization can differ. The available coil widths, permitted nesting and rolling-direction requirements influence what must be purchased to produce the required parts.

The drawing also defines manufacturing complexity. Packet transitions, joint arrangements, holes, local clearances and the assembly configuration affect tooling, identification and inspection. A tonne of straightforward repeated laminations is not automatically the same production task as a tonne divided among many controlled features.

Review the governing revision and delivery interfaces

Delivery form changes the boundary again. Loose laminations, pre-stacked packets and a complete assembled core require different handling, verification and packaging work. A weight-only quote can hide that difference until the supplier asks for a revision.

A useful pre-quotation review should identify the governing drawing revision and unresolved technical points. It should distinguish a mandatory feature from one that the designer may allow the supplier to optimize. Without that distinction, a yield improvement can become an unauthorized design change.

Review the interfaces that can generate downstream work: winding fit, required measurement state, temporary supports, yoke opening and the agreed test configuration. An omitted requirement does not become inexpensive merely because it was absent from the first price.

The supplier need not solve every detail before issuing a budgetary number. It should state the assumptions behind that number and the items that require confirmation before a firm commitment.

Distinguish a budget estimate from a firm quotation

For purchasing, early technical questions are therefore not necessarily delay tactics. A relevant drawing query can prevent the wrong material order, an unsuitable manufacturing route or a quotation that excludes required work.

Judge the quality of those questions. They should identify a specific ambiguity and its consequence, not create an endless request for information already present in the drawing.

The commercial value of drawing review is scope accuracy. It allows a quotation to describe a core that can actually be manufactured, inspected and delivered as required, instead of a steel quantity that will be re-priced once the real job becomes visible.

Practical takeaway

Mass supports a budget estimate but does not define the production task.

Chenfan Electric manufactures custom transformer cores according to customer drawings. Where applicable to the specified material and core design, agreed process controls include burr height below 0.02 mm and stacking factor above 97%. Measurement methods and acceptance conditions are defined for each order.
