Summary: A working glossary for CRGO, lamination geometry, step-lap joints, material certificates and finished-core tests.
Version 1.0.0 · 2026-09-27
These terms support drawing reviews and purchasing discussions. A
project’s controlled drawing and agreed specification take precedence
where terminology differs.
| Term | Working definition | Practical distinction |
|---|---|---|
| CRGO / GOES | Cold-rolled grain-oriented electrical steel / grain-oriented electrical steel. |
Specify the exact grade, nominal thickness, coating and test basis; the acronym alone is not a grade. |
| Hi-B | High-permeability class of GOES. | A class description, not a substitute for a mill grade and certificate. |
| Domain-refined / laser-scribed GOES | Material treated to influence magnetic domain structure. | Confirm treatment type and any process restrictions with the material supplier. |
| Mill test certificate (MTC) | Mill-issued identification and recorded test results for a material batch or coil. |
It supports material acceptance; it does not prove finished-core loss. |
| Slit coil | A master coil cut lengthwise into narrower strips. | Specify strip width and tolerance, edge condition, coil identification and packing. |
| Lamination | A cut electrical-steel piece used in a core. | Its shape, orientation, coating and burr condition affect assembly. |
| Packet | An identified group of laminations in a defined stacking sequence. |
Count, orientation and sequence must remain traceable in transit. |
| Pre-stacked packet | Laminations grouped or partially stacked before delivery. | Agree which stacking steps remain at the receiving plant. |
| Ready-to-insert core | A core supplied to an agreed assembly stage for the buyer’s winding or final assembly process. |
Define installed hardware, restraint, lifting method and handover condition; the phrase alone is insufficient. |
| Limb / yoke | Vertical / horizontal parts of the magnetic circuit in a typical frame core. |
Drawings must distinguish their stepped sections and interfaces. |
| Window height / width | Clear openings available for winding, insulation and clamping. | Clear window width is different from limb centre distance. |
| Limb centre distance | Centre-to-centre spacing of limbs. | Do not infer clear window width from it without the limb geometry. |
| Step geometry | Widths, build, quantity and orientation of the lamination steps forming a section. |
State whether thickness is per side, total physical stack or net steel. |
| Step-lap joint | Joint with lamination ends displaced in a controlled sequence. | Offset, group size and repeat sequence belong in the released lamination plan. |
| Burr height | Height of raised metal at a cut edge, measured by an agreed method. |
A process indicator; acceptance requires a defined location, sample plan and limit. |
| Stacking factor | Ratio of net steel cross-sectional area to gross physical stack area, under a stated measurement condition. |
Must use the same area definitions and compression condition in calculations and inspection. |
| Specific core loss | Material test result per unit mass, usually reported in W/kg at specified frequency and flux density. |
Check test standard, specimen condition and units. |
| Magnetizing apparent power | Material excitation requirement, commonly reported as VA/kg under stated test conditions. |
It is distinct from specific loss in W/kg. |
| Finished-core no-load loss | Power drawn by the assembled core under a specified excitation and measurement arrangement. |
Material loss and finished-core loss are separate evidence. |
| Building factor | An explicitly defined ratio between a finished-core result and a material-based reference estimate. |
The ratio is meaningful only when the mass, test conditions and reference basis are stated. |
| SKD / CKD | Semi-knocked-down / completely knocked-down supply format. | Specify the exact work split, identification, instructions and included parts per order. |

Practical Notes
Use the current approved drawing, material specification and purchase order. Document the measurement basis and acceptance limits before production; this reference does not set contract values.
